We respectfully acknowledge the people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional custodians of Greater Melbourne.

The Wurundjeri People are the traditional custodians of most of Melbourne's north - its original freshwater community. Click here to go to Wurundjeri Elder Ian Hunter talking Melbourne Indigenous Aboriginal history & culture.

Today many individuals, community groups (friends groups and NGO's) and government bodies, as well as commercial and industrial organisations, collectively make up the community of Melbourne's freshwater systems.

Friends Groups and other community based non-government organisations (NGO's) have joined forces with local residents, individuals, schools, industry, government bodies and water authorities to restore and protect Melbourne's freshwater systems, associated environments, flora and fauna.

"When people become truly native to their own home-places, when they identify with them, and commit to them, then degraded places will be lovingly restored and intact places will be lovingly maintained. When all places, whether urban or rural, have their custodians, then protection of 'the environment' will be assured." from CERES: Singing Up The City, by Freya Mathews
