friends groups & NGO's
Melbourne's local residents and individuals have joined forces to form friends groups and other types of non-government organisations (NGO's) to protect and preserve Melbourne's freshwater systems, native vegetation, fauna & environs.
friends groups organise events such as planting & weeding days, litter clean up and bird watching. They often work in partnership with local, state & federal government and other NGO's.
NGO's work in a range of capacities, such as the Environment Defenders Office Victoria (EDO) - an independent, non-profit, community, legal service, practicing in public interest environmental law.
The Victorain National Parks Association Inc. (VNPA) is the state's leading nature conservation organisation. It is an independent, non-profit, membership-based group, which exists to protect Victoria's unique natural environment and biodiversity through the establishment and effective management of national parks, conservation reserves and other measures.
