Click here for Contact Information.Great news MECCARG recently won a Melbourne Water Community Grant of about $5,000. This will fund the revegetation of the escarpment to the south east of the Murray Road bridge. Most of MECCARG's activities for the year will be a this site. MECCARGThe Merri and Edgars Creek Confluence Area Restoration Group (MECCARG) held their first planting day on Saturday 22nd July 2006. This sub-group of the Friends of Merri Creek was recently formed by locals Dave and Nic, who both have several years of experience in the land restoration industry.
At least 30 locals showed up at the site of the Murray Road bridge, far exceeding the expectations of organizers. About 300 plants were put in the ground, mostly small flowering plants on and around a rocky outcrop, as well as some trees and shrubs scattered through the parkland.
MECCARG hopes to involve as much of the local community as possible in activities around the confluence of the Merri and Edgars Creeks, including; planting, weed removal, litter collection, information walks and talks, as well as collecting seeds and growing plants. The group plans to seek funding from local council and various government grants to support its activities. Activities are held on the first Saturday of each month. We started our planting for the year at the last MECCARG activity and we've got heaps more to do over the next few months (at laest 700 plants to be planted and lots of tree guarding). We'll need lots of help to make sure we get them all in the ground early so they can establish before summer. Bring gloves and sturdy footwear, bring watering can bucket, and digging tool if you can. I'll be
leafleting the area this weekend to try to get more people involved, if Saturday Jul 7th 1pm-3pm meet at Merri bike path just south of Murray Rd bridge Coburg. Continue planting. Bring gloves and sturdy footwear, bring watering can bucket, and digging tool if you can. |
