Melbourne's freshwater systems are home to a vast variety of birds, fish, mammals, invertebrates, reptiles & amphibians, providing food & safety in which to breed and raise their young.

Many species are full time residents of Melbourne's freshwater systems, others, such as the Sacred Kingfisher, include Melbourne's green corridors as part in their migration path. The Short-finned Eel travels from the Coral Sea to journey up Melbourne's creeks and rivers each year.

Water quality, the abundance of indigenous flora and human impact have had a profound effect on Melbourne's freshwater fauna, resulting in loss of habitat and reduction in food supply. Sadly some species, such as the Spotted Eastern Quoll, have already become extinct, while many others are in danger of the same fate.
