The flora of Greater Melbourne is made up over twenty different plant communities. These are influenced by factors such as soil type, topography, geology and climate. Most of Melbourne's freshwaters systems cover kilometers of different landscape types, consequently the plant varieties typical to them are many and varied. There are a number of quality websites and resources listed in the Flora Links, which specialize in native flora, including Flora Victoria, which specialises in direct seeding of native grasses, high diversity indigenous revegetation and the management of remnant vegetation. Flora for Fauna, an initiative of the Nursery & Garden Industry, have website providing information about planting to attract native fauna to your own garden. Native Nurseries are a great source of information, plants and other supplies. Candlebark Community Nursery Inc. is a self supporting, non-profit, volunteer based indigenous plant nursery which has been operating in Melbourne’s outer east (Croydon) for over 12 years. Their primary goals are conservation of local plants and animals, and to disseminate environmental information. They have close contacts with friends groups inside Maroondah and the Yarra Ranges, and do a lot of work for Melbourne Water’s Stream Frontage Management Program. They are an ideal contact for people interested in the health of local waterways.
